All sessions take place on Saturdays. These practice sessions have been running for eight years and were originally for our Small Steps to Health students. They have now become instructor skill builder sessions, giving instructors a dedicated hour to work on their own development. Students are then welcome to join afterwards, ensuring everyone continues to benefit from the sessions.

Tai Chi Stick | Saturday Class

Skills Builders Instructor Cuppa & Practice Sessions
Long Eaton Tai Chi & Qigong is the UK Midlands hub for Dr Paul Lam’s Tai Chi for Health Institute (TCHI). Senior Instructors Julie Barker and Jane Gordon lead monthly practice sessions for local TCHI instructors and students.
Last Saturday of the Month | Min £5 donation to cover rent & refreshments
Donations from Skills Builder sessions for instructors are used to cover costs only. These sessions are led by volunteers and run on a not for profit basis.

Join TCHI Master Trainer Philip Kums in Long Eaton for two specialist, one-day instructor training courses. Each course can be booked separately and is suitable for both new and existing instructors looking to develop their knowledge and practical skills in a friendly, supportive environment.
Full-course participants must complete the relevant Self-paced Instructor Preparation Package (SIPP) before attending the in-person training. Skills updates are for qualified instructors who need to renew their certification. Fees include the applicable online learning, refreshments and lunch.

Dr Paul Lam and his team of medical and tai chi specialists developed this programme to be safe and effective for people who may be at increased risk of falling.
The programme combines gentle tai chi movements with a focus on balance, flexibility, muscular strength, posture and coordination. Regular practice can also support mobility, confidence, relaxation and overall quality of life.
Tai Chi for Arthritis is recognised by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as an evidence-based physical activity programme for adults with arthritis. Tai chi is also widely recognised as a beneficial form of strength and balance exercise for helping to reduce the risk of falls

Tai Chi for Diabetes was developed by Dr Paul Lam in collaboration with a team of medical specialists and tai chi experts. It is designed to support people living with diabetes by encouraging gentle physical activity and improving general health and wellbeing.
The programme can help improve flexibility, muscular strength, cardiovascular fitness, posture and balance while bringing greater awareness and coordination to the mind and body. It has also received support from Diabetes Australia.
Based on Sun and Yang styles of tai chi, Tai Chi for Diabetes is designed to be safe, effective and easy to learn.
Course Requirements & Registration
Participants are expected to have some previous experience and to complete the required pre-course preparation before attending.

Dr Paul Lam and his team of medical and tai chi specialists developed the original Tai Chi for Arthritis programme to be safe and accessible for people living with arthritis. Its gentle movements can help improve balance, flexibility, muscular strength and general wellbeing.
The original Tai Chi for Arthritis programme contains 12 movements. Responding to requests for a longer set, Dr Lam selected nine additional forms to create Tai Chi for Arthritis 2.
Featuring more sophisticated movements and subtle changes of direction, TCA2 is intended for people who have completed the original programme and would like to broaden their repertoire, deepen their understanding of tai chi principles and further develop their practice.

Tai Chi for Osteoporosis was developed by Dr Paul Lam in collaboration with his tai chi associates and a team of medical specialists. The programme is designed to support people living with osteoporosis by focusing on balance, posture, muscular strength, relaxation and general fitness.
Improving balance and coordination can help reduce the risk of falls, which is particularly important for people with osteoporosis. The programme includes gentle weight-bearing movements designed to support bone health.
Based on Sun and Yang styles of tai chi, the programme includes warm-up and wind-down exercises, breathing exercises, special safety precautions and movements involving stepping in four directions. It is designed to be safe, effective and accessible.

Participants are expected to have some previous experience and to complete the required pre-course preparation before attending.

Bursary Scheme 2026
We are pleased to introduce our 2026 bursary scheme, supporting Tai Chi & Qigong students across the UK and Ireland in attending workshops and developing as instructors.
A total of £1,500 is available, funded by Dr Janet Cromb and Long Eaton Tai Chi & Qigong.
£1,000 Workshop Support
Support for participants attending TCHI classes in the UK and Ireland, helping them take part in workshops with a Master Trainer or Dr Lam.
£500 Instructor Support
Support for individuals who would like to train and develop as Tai Chi instructors.
How the bursary works
Participants can apply for a maximum of £50 per year towards in-depth workshops, with a one-off payment available for those pursuing instructor training. The scheme runs from May to April.
Who can apply?
You should be a regular class attendee and be familiar with the warm-up and form of the workshop from memory.
Supporting the Bursary
Income from UK TCHI polo shirt sales and instructor courses run by Long Eaton Tai Chi & Qigong will be added to the bursary fund.
Donations are also very welcome. The greater the fund, the more people we can support.
